He received an A.S. in Law Enforcement from West Valley College, a B.S. in Law Enforcement from Metropolitan State College, and a M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Colorado. Certified as a Police Executive and a Force Science Analyst by the Force Science Institute at the Minnesota State University, he previously served as President for the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police. He served as Police Sergeant for the Los Gatos Police Department and then Chief of Police in Westminster, Colorado. He also served as Interim Chief of Police in Lochbuie, Colorado. He has served as a police practice consultant in various states including California, Georgia, Utah, and New York. He is currently Owner and CEO of a police practices consulting firm.

She spent 21 years with the Los Angeles Police Department, where she worked very closely with the University of Southern California.
