Al Barqawi, MD, FRCS, is an Associate clinical Professor and Lecturer in the Division of Urology at University of Colorado School of medicine. Dr. Barqawi also serves as Director of Research in the Section of Urologic Oncology. He has expertise in urologic oncology and general Urology primarily in prostate disease, early detection, novel imaging and treatment applications and epidemiology. He is interested in men’s health research, particularly sexual function and testosterone effect on general health. He also acts as the Principal Investigator for several national research projects. He pioneered 3D imaging of the prostate gland and focal targeted therapy for prostate cancer. He performed the first focal interstitial laser therapy of the prostate in the US. He also initiated the first phase I study for intra-prostatic injection of Botox for the treatment of BPH. He published more than 100 peer reviewed articles and book chapters. He presented at many national and international meetings. He is also an elected member of the Editorial Board for several national and international medical journals. He serves regularly on the scientific committees for National science foundation and department of defense grant meetings.
