Car Accident Linked to Testicular Torsion

Case Overview

This case involves a young male patient with no past medical history or testicular problems who developed right-sided testicular pain several days after he was a victim in a motor vehicle accident in the state of Idaho. The patient suffered neck pain after the accident, and was on bed rest at the advice of a physician. In addition to the pain in his neck and back, the patient noticed the development of severe, persistent pain in his testicle. The patient did not seek treatment at the ER until several days after the pain had first presented. A scrotal ultrasound found no blood flow to the right testis, and he was diagnosed with right testicular torsion. As a result, the patient’s right testicle had to be removed.

Questions to the Urology expert and their responses

Q1

Do you diagnose and treat testicular torsion? If so, how often?

Testicular torsion following trauma to the testicle is well recognized. The question in this case would be whether any signs or symptoms were ignored so that perhaps the testis could have been saved. In any case, the accident would be a causative factor leading to the loss of the testicle. I can review the medical records.

Q2

Could you review the medical notes and opine on whether or not the accident could have precipitated testicular torsion in this patient?

Testicular torsion following trauma to the testicle is well recognized. The question in this case would be whether any signs or symptoms were ignored so that perhaps the testis could have been saved. In any case, the accident would be a causative factor leading to the loss of the testicle. I can review the medical records.
