Amazon Faces InterDigital Patent Lawsuits Worldwide
InterDigital alleges Amazon’s Prime and Fire TV platforms infringe key patents covering HDR and video compression technology.

InterDigital has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Amazon in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, alleging that Amazon’s Fire TV, Prime Video, Kindle, and Echo Show products infringe key patents related to video compression and high dynamic-range (HDR) technology.
The case, InterDigital Inc. et al. v. Amazon.com Services LLC (No. 1:25-cv-01365), comes after Amazon filed its own lawsuits against InterDigital in the U.K. and Brazil, seeking rulings on what it calls fair licensing rates for video codec patents. InterDigital’s new U.S. action marks a major escalation, adding to related filings in Brazil and Germany, where the company has launched similar infringement suits before the Rio de Janeiro State Court and the Munich Regional Court.
The Patents in Dispute
The complaint identifies five U.S. patents covering HDR video playback, dynamic range conversion, and advanced compression methods using AV1 and VP9 codecs. InterDigital alleges Amazon uses these technologies without authorization in Fire TV devices, tablets, and smart displays.
Two sets of Amazon products are highlighted:
- HDR Accused Devices: Fire TV and Fire Stick models capable of HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision playback.
- Codec Accused Devices: Products capable of decoding AV1 or VP9 video, including Fire tablets and Echo Show devices.
InterDigital claims Amazon’s ongoing use of these technologies constitutes willful infringement under 35 U.S.C. § 271.
Statements from the Parties
InterDigital said it prefers to negotiate licensing terms amicably but filed the lawsuit after Amazon initiated litigation abroad. “Our preference is always to sign licenses through amicable negotiation,” said Chief Legal Officer Josh Schmidt, “but Amazon’s decision to initiate litigation earlier this year shows that Amazon is more interested in litigating than negotiating.”
Amazon has previously stated that it filed suit to determine “fair licensing rates” for InterDigital’s video codec patents and has not publicly commented on the Delaware filing.
Legal Relief and Broader Context
InterDigital seeks a permanent injunction, enhanced damages for willful infringement, and monetary relief including royalties and legal fees. The company is represented by McKool Smith, P.C. and Farnan LLP.
The suit underscores growing tensions between research firms and content platforms over licensing of digital media technologies. As streaming services rely on advanced video compression and HDR capabilities, disputes over intellectual property rights are expected to intensify.
