This is a patent dispute in Virginia between two manufacturers of motion capture technology used in the film and video game industries to capture motion performances from actors. The data is captured via accelerometers, magnetometers, and gyroscopes that can very accurately capture 3D position, orientation, velocity, acceleration, angular velocity and angular acceleration of person to which the sensor is attached. The defendant in this suit allegedly copied the design of the plaintiff’s system, and manufactured a competing technology in partnership with an offshore manufacturer.

I am very familiar with wireless personal area networks designed to collect physiological and motion data from a person and this is my main area of academic research. Since 2010 I've been leading applied research efforts in this area including the development, prototyping and applying wireless sensor platforms. I believe I am qualified to review this matter because I developed technologies in this area, published peer reviewed papers in reputable journals and reviewed many manuscripts as well as grant proposals for the NSF. I am also an active member in the Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) research community which means I am up to date with state of the art in wearable technologies and their industrial standardization. In addition to my relevant technical expertise, I also have considerable experience in writing and evaluating patents. I am the inventor of 15 patents to date and a have been a regular member on patent evaluation committees at my university.
