Horrific Complications Accompany Plastic Surgery Malpractice

A woman suffered extreme complications from a series of plastic surgery procedures after contracting necrotizing fasciitis, a bacterial infection more commonly known as the “flesh-eating disease.” She had asked her surgeon for a buttock lift with fat injections, abdominoplasty, and liposuction. The bacterial disease manifested less than a week after her procedures, and she had to undergo numerous procedures to remove damaged tissue and reconstruct parts of her body. An experienced plastic surgeon was needed in the consequent malpractice lawsuit to review the patient’s records and opine on whether there was a deviation from the standard of care in the operation.

Question(s) For Expert Witness

1. Are you familiar with the type of patient described in the case?

2. Have you ever seen a patient with this complication?

Expert Witness Response E-035111

inline imageI am familiar with this type of patient, who is having a fairly common type of body contouring operation, although this is not an extensive part of my practice. I have not had necrotizing fasciitis as a complication of any of my procedures, but I have treated many patients with necrotizing fasciitis arising from various causes. With E. coli, one does wonder about whether a rectal perforation may have occurred during lipo or fat injections.
