Case Overview
This case involves an unfortunate incident where an individual died after being struck by a cyclist while crossing the street in the early morning hours. Emergency medical services were promptly called, and the individual was transported via helicopter to a nearby medical center. The allegations center on the negligent operation of the bicycle by the cyclist, raising questions about adherence to safety standards and regulations governing bicycle operation on public roadways.
Questions to the Athletic Training expert and their responses
Please describe your professional background in bicycle operations and safety, specifically as it pertains to triathlon bicycles, if applicable.
I have been a triathlon coach since 2007, working with numerous beginner athletes through several nonprofits and triathlon clubs. I also work directly with clients. Specifically, I have worked with adults to learn the rules of the road when operating road and triathlon bikes on shared roadways and trails. I have planned out courses and safety protocols for workouts and rides with single athletes with hundreds of participants. In 2011, I became a bicycle mechanic specializing in triathlon-specific bikes due to their specific requirements for tuning, fitting, and handling. I have provided crash reviews for several clients to help them with insurance claims in accidents.
Briefly, what standards exist pertaining to street operation of these bicycles, including any certifications or licensures?
The operation of bicycles on Texas roadways adheres to the same laws as motor vehicles. Cyclists are required to follow the same rules as motorized vehicles on Texas roadways, although some municipalities have specific laws pertaining to the use of bicycles on roadways; they are few and far between.
