He earned his BA in biochemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara, before receiving his MD from the Baylor College of Medicine. He then completed an internship in surgery at the Baylor Affiliated Hospitals, followed by a residency in surgery and a fellowship in surgical critical care and trauma at Boston University.
